HISTORY
Like the companies that we invest in, our firm began as a vision of a better way to run an early-stage venture capital business. During the peak of the Internet boom in 1999, Gabriel's two founding partners, Phil Samper and Rick Bolander, sensed the need for a venture capital firm which truly embodied a best-practices, team approach towards investing - in which there would be not only great institutional knowledge, but also a repeatable model for success without relying on any single "rainmaker." A firm which not only grow investment professionals through a concerted effort of development and mentoring, but also enforce rigorous investment discipline and establish best practices for true team-based value-add. We set a high bar of qualification in the areas of intellect, technology, operating experience and investment experience for each individual member of the Gabriel team, but also strive for the right group chemistry through complementary functional and sector expertise to achieve outstanding results.
Rather than employ the "shotgun" approach of sprinkling money across many promising markets and hoping for the best, Phil and Rick envisioned a firm with a "rifle-shot" approach towards early-stage venture investing, leveraging thought-leadership in a few, focused sectors. A firm that would make fewer investments overall, but which would leverage the firm's collective networks and experience in technology, industry, and management to actively partner with each company for the long-haul to maximize the equity growth. The same approach, in fact, which led to the outstanding successes of prior investments such as Exodus Communications, Tut Systems, Concord Communications, and Sylvan Learning Systems.
From a humble beginning and a grand vision, the Gabriel team has grown to span two offices in Silicon Valley and Mid-Atlantic Corridor. The team has been carefully selected with complimentary skill sets across the fields of technology, CEO and operational management experience, sales and marketing, consulting, and private equity to provide the best possible expertise, assistance and value to our portfolio companies.
Gabriel has now raised two funds with over $260MM under management. The portfolio consists of over fourteen companies. We continue to actively evaluate and invest in new opportunities. We're also pleased with our vision of the evolution of the venture capital industry, as we now see many other firms beginning to strive towards the same discipline in portfolio management and investment approach that Gabriel was founded upon. We look forward to a long and successful future, as the vision of a strong, robust institution becomes a reality.
